legal advice against apartment complex?
I have been charged over $500 in fees from a previous 4 bedroom apartment. The total was well over $1000 in ridiculous fines and the $500 is my share. I was never personally billed but followed a collections notice to find they charged things like $350 in damage to dining chairs(they currently cost $11.99 a piece at IKEA), $400 in excessive dirt in hallways and charged for carpet shampoo. Most charges were in common room areas and none were associated to my room. As well, one of my roomates was billed this same amount, but after a lengthy amount of sweet talking to the complex director managed to have all fines removed. He is willing to produce a statement/ testify toward this issue. This is all in Seattle, Wa btw. My question is what legal actions can I take to avoid paying these charges and damaging my credit? You are still responsible for making sure the entire unit was clean, even if you stayed in your room the whole time that you lived there. Your name was also on the lease, right? And when you signed the lease, you signed for the apartment, not the room. If the sweet talking worked for your friend, why not attempt the same thing? Yes, fines for damages/junk/repairs/replacements upon moving are usually excessive. Many apartments charge $40 to replace a light bulb. Try talking to the director, and seeing if he can work with you in any way. Like maybe you can offer to go buy him/her new chairs and deliver them yourself. If you DO cut a deal, get it in writing.
