Cushion Pillow Cover
Any tips on how to crochet a simple pillow cover?
I have a square cushion but I am lost on how to start crocheting to cover it. Any tips?
Measure the pillow’s width in inches and also the height of the pillow. You will crochet 2 pieces exactly alike, that match these numbers plus some added/extra inches called an allowance, to compensate for the thickness of the pillow.
Add 1/2 inch to the inches you need for height and 1/2 inch to the inches you need for width. That should do it if the stuffing or foam inside of the pillow is not very thick. If the pillow is very thick add 1 inch to the needed measurements for both width and height.
Then simply make a crochet chain long enough to match the width plus that extra half to one inch. Crocheting loosely, using simple single crochet stitches, crochet into the chain, making the first row. Continue adding rows to this original row, until the piece measures the needed amount fpr height, plus the additional 1/2 to one inch.
Fasten off.
Make 2 of these pieces exacty alike. Write down as you go what the number of chain stitches was, number of rows needed, etc to be sure you make them alike.
Stitch together using a yarn needle and the same yarn you used to crochet the pillow. Stitch three sides together, slip pillow in the pocket ypu have made, then close the pillow up inside by stitching that last side closed.
Voila! Simple, but it works.
If you are going to make fancier stitches that require more yarn and are more bulky, therefore making the fabric of the pillow thicker, you will need to make sure you add more than the 1/2 to one inch allowance to the measurements for height and width.
Your beginning chain must therefore be longer, to match those bigger measurements, and you will need to crochet more rows also.
