What to feed a horse!?!?! 10 pointss!!?
I really need to know (for quarter horse or any horse that is 15-16hh)
How much would you feed a quarter horse!?
How often would you feed it?
What would u feed it? (grain hay water salt block etc)
And what else do you need to know about looking after a horse.
When do you rug?
Do you need to rug?
What to do every day?
Every time you ride?
etc etc

Oh boy! I have to jump in here before you get some bad advise and your horse ends up coming down with colic…then you’re in for a nice big vet bill!
1st: How much you feed your horse not only depends on how much the horse weighs but also whether your horse is an easy keeper or a hard keeper (basically high or low metabolism). The usual feeds to choose from are a pelleted feed or a sweet feed. Both of these types of feed have a balanced nutrition that should keep you from having to feed many supliments.
I feed our horses a 12% sweet feed which is best for a mature horse that has regular excersize. I feed about 4 pounds 2x a day but my horses are small. You really should contact a vet or nutritionist to find the best feed for your horse based on what area of the country you are in, etc.
2nd: The amount of hay you feed will depend on whether your horse is stall kept or is turned out during the day to graze. Usually 1-2 flakes of a nice grass alfalfa mix hay 2x a day is good. You will want to watch your horse’s weight to see if you need to feed more or less.
3rd: DO NOT SWITCH YOUR HORSE FROM ONE FEED TO ANOTHER! Horse’s have very sensitive digestive systems and you cannot switch them quickly from one feed to another. This should be done gradually over the course of about 2 weeks. If you need to switch feeds you should start by just adding a handful of the new feed to the old feed and then very gradually adding more of the new feed and decrease the amount of the old feed.

As far as blanketing…if your horse has a nice winter coat you only need to blanket when it gets really cold (usually I blanket if it gets below 15 degrees at night and my horses have thick winter coats). If your horse doesn’t have much of a winter coat you may need to blanket more often but that also depends on the climate where you live.
Additionally, you should wash your horse’s blanket regularly if you are covering him. You don’t like wearing dirty clothes and neither does your horse!
There are many other things to think about in caring for a horse but mainly you should make sure he has access to fresh, clean water at all times, shelter from the elements if he is pasture kept and a clean stall (I know it’s not fun, but stalls need to be picked out every day) if he is stall kept.
