Help with people visiting the barn? what should i do?
So I am a senior volunteer at the Indiana Horse Rescue and a group of girl scouts might come to visit and help out. Im not sure as of right now when this will happen, or how many and what ages they are. I was wondering what are some things they can help with. So far i have:
-pick stalls( we have like 30 stalls being occupied)
-groom horses(that are easy going and trusting)
-hand out salt/mineral blocks
-maybe teach them how to saddle and bridle a horse
-have the director talk about ‘neglect’
Keep in mind that it is a RESCUE and a good portion of the horses are not yet trusting enough that i would feel comfortable letting young girls who arent experianced in with them.
i wasnt sure if pony rides on broke horses would be in good taste or not..
any ideas are very much appreciated!
yea, they will all have to have their parents fill out a “release of liability” before they can see the horses
I wouldn’t consider pony rides unless it is a really small group. A few reasons why:
You’d have to have a range of child sized helmets on hand
That’s all they are going to think about and remember from the day
Large groups of little girls are excitable and hyper-even a broke horse might not be himself in that situation
Time-it will take awhile to get them all up and around the ring, the others are going to get bored, and bored kids are scary;-)
I would make it clear from the start that they are not there to ride but to learn about horses and the rescue-that’s all they are going to be thinking about unless you make it clear from the start
Your ideas sound great-here is a possible schedule to follow based on them
take them a tour to start (after a quick talk about general horse safety)
Lead out a couple of horses and tell them their stories while they watch and listen from a safe distance
Daily jobs and upkeep around the barn (they’ll be more willing to do dirty work after seeing examples of why they are there)
Break into small groups to groom safe horses
Closing talk about horse care, neglect, etc.
