Knotted Wool Painting the hall, not sure how many coats of primer to use?
Got rid of layers of old varnish and stripped woodwork to the bare wood. Intended to use 1 coat of primer, 2 undercoat and 1 gloss, but the primer has gone on quite thin and in places I had to rub it down to the wood again to smooth out drips in the knotting solution I had used. Gave the primer a light sand with 120 sandpaper and in some places wire wool and it is very smooth which would make a good base for the undercoat but due to it being so thin I am wondering whether to give it another coat of primer and light sand again before undercoating. I have put loads of effort into this and want to get a good finish but don’t want to make the paintwork too thick like it was before. On the other hand I am worried that because the primer is really thin the wood might not be sealed properly. Would be really grateful for any advice.
You have pretty much got it right……My worry would be if you used and paint stripper on original removal of varnish….make sure that this does not react with any new paint. Use good quality,oil based undercoat….dulux or similar and allow paint to dry fully between coats, like 24 – 36 hours. Monitor no reaction between original stripper chemical used…but yes no more primer required, continue with 2 coat undercoat and final coat gloss……Dulux do a great range of exterior undercoat and gloss…………best on market….really good for interior works…..very robust.
