Large Area what plants and flowers are suitable for a large shady area that has little soil and lots of building rubble?
We have a large area that is mostly shady; about 1cm of top soil, with builders’ rubble left over from when the building was constructed. I’m in London. Any suggestions for what plants might work? Grass just dies and at the moment it’s covered with weeds, but no idea what they are. Ideally, we’d like something interesting and maybe colourful.
In this weedy patch, identify what you have to make sure you have nothing there of value that may have been planted long ago and got lost, then yank out as much of the weed plants as you can, especially the roots as they can come back with a vengeance. People plant yucca a lot around here, even though we are zoned similar to your area, and once planted, like bamboo, it is forever and ever and requires a direct hit from a tactical nuclear warhead to remove. If you have those plants there, give up without a fight. I was hired once to do a replant in a bed that had a few tiny yuccas and had to dig a hole 5 feet deep and 10 feet around to remove the roots. I had 2 contractor size wheelbarrow loads, heaping loads when I had finished and I know the next year the little bits missed reared their ugly heads and sneered at all my labors. Meant for the cruel conditions of the desert, they take over like hungry rats anywhere they are planted short of the glacial extremes.
Addressing the soil issue first, a plant doesn’t care about the texture of the soil it is in. Looking at hydroponics, I have grown wonderful plants in gravel, pure sand, and a great number of inorganic “junk”. That said, the key is what the plant gets in its nutrients. Many think plants eat the soil but the reality is that they exist on the soil solution. Roots take in dissolved nutrients of which there are about a dozen or so. Choices here are to add organic material to increase the “bank account” of needed nutrition (withdrawals from this account are limited the way nature intended, and in relation to the pH which is kind of like the percent returns on the investment as it were), or to feed frequently with light solutions containing chemical or more organic fertilizer. Problem of the soil is solved. Even if you were growing plants in broken bottles and crushed brick, you are covered. The woman down the street has been screening the poor soil out by the roadside to plant a bed for the last year now but I don’t know her, yet, and she looks so cute in her gardening jeans I thought I would just watch a bit and see how she makes out. I haven’t the heart to tell her (or something like that) but next time I see her maybe I’ll say hello.
As to plant choices you can use most anything if you are part shade and part sun. Shade choices won’t burn up (if they get wilted in the heat just water a bit more and increase mulch thickness). Sunny choices will probably get enough sun (but high light plants like most junipers will tend to thin out a little). Top off your planting with any mulch, nice and thick to smother any remaining weeds. You can even add a layer of 3 sheets of news paper under that mulch to really give the remaining weeds a run for their money. You know all those so- called “free” websites that make you subscribe to offers from other places just to get a free iPod or laptop? That’s gotta be a big pile of BS, right? Just a money- grubbing scheme. I have never heard of a Canadian company that actually gives away free stuff, because they don’t exist, right?

Those are good sites to stay away from. Unfortunately there is very little free on the net. There are exceptions of course such as AVG, an excellent anti-virus program… SpyBot and Adaware which catch and clean spyware, trojans, key loggers, etc. out of your computer …SpyBlaster which does not allow the spyware etc. to even gain access to your computer. There are other sites which offer free things as well. If you are in doubt as to various free offers I have found cnet.com will let you know what is available for free downloads and will let you know the pros and cons of each freebie.
One of the big problems with a lot of the “free” stuff is that you normally have to pay shipping and handling on the item and they tend to overcharge. They also want either your credit card, debit card, or personal check information to pay the s/h charges. Your personal check has the routing number of your bank and your account number listed on the bottom which they could use to drain your bank account should they be dishonest. If you use your credit card they have your account number and with that they can order merchandise either on the phone or over the Internet with your card. They will receive the merchandise and you will receive the bill. If that is not enough these unscrupulous people tend to sell your name, address, phone number, etc. to other people and businesses so they can telephone you at home trying to sell you something you don’t want or need. They sell your email address to Internet companies so they can send you spam and load up your computer with spyware, trojans, key loggers, ( they can then track EVERYTHING you do and EVERYWHERE you visit on the Internet. (They also sell this information to different companies) They can hijack your home page and even make changes in your registry. If you are not familiar with your registry, trying to fix it yourself can be disasterous. Whatever you decide to do be careful and very good luck to you!
