Dog pee smell in 8′ X 10′ wool area rug!?
I had coit come out and give me an estimate, and do not want to pay almost $400 for a carpet we will probably get rid of in a year or two. However, it is a very expensive carpet and want to keep it until then. I know that you can’t use traditional carpet cleaning machines on wool. I was thinking of getting a gallon of natures miracle and dousing the carpet with that. We have hardwood floors so we would have to put it somewhere to dry.
1st question: How long would the drying time be?
2nd question: Any other ways to clean the wool carpet to get rid of the smell? Some of the stains are probably quite old, but since the rug is dark brown we cannot see them.
Any help is appreciated. This is driving me crazy!
Your best bet is to just have Coit or some professional cleaner do it. Just dousing it with deodorizer isn’t going to get it clean, it will just cover up the smell, but when it gets humid it will start smelling again. If you care about the carpet, then you are going to have to use a professional and I would actually recommend using Coit. Maybe try telling them that 400 is way to much, maybe they can cut you a cheaper rate? It’s worth asking…
Next idea I have would be for you to go rent a portable steam cleaner. Sometimes coit uses these portable machines for places that they cant run their truck hoses up to. You can rent one for around $65 I think, and the rental place might have some type of deodorizer they sell that will be safe for wool.
I know these rugs are very expensive, and you should not risk putting something on it that will ruin it. The only way to clean it is steam cleaning, so I would look into renting a machine if you do not want to pay a professional. Just so you know, the professional would be able to get it much cleaner than you can on your own
